A faucet is an application or website that distributes small amounts of cryptocurrency for free, often in exchange for completing simple tasks such as solving captchas, watching ads, or signing up for a platform. Faucets were originally used to promote new cryptocurrencies and educate users about how they work—one of the earliest known faucets was the Bitcoin Faucet created in 2010 by Gavin Andresen.
Today, faucets are commonly used for testing transactions on test networks (e.g., Goerli Faucet for Ethereum), where users can receive test tokens to experiment with smart contracts and decentralized applications. However, many faucets on mainnet blockchains have disappeared due to low rewards, making them less attractive, and high transaction fees, which have made distributing small amounts impractical.
